(Video)

Shirley Sherrod, an official at the United States Department of Agriculture
has resigned after a speech she gave at an NAACP
<http://indyposted.com/?s=NAACP> function in March was aired on Breitbart
<http://biggovernment.com/abreitbart/2010/07/19/video-proof-the-naacp-awards
-racism2010/> News and other conservative news outlets. In the speech,
Sherrod, whose job it was to help farmers facing foreclosure of their

with a

helping a white

admitted on tape were racial in nature. The

naacp/> Dakota Voice quotes the video of Sherrod's speech as follows.

The first time I was faced with having to help a white farmer save his farm.
He took a long time talking but he was trying to show me he was superior to
me. I know what he was doing. But he had to come to me for help. What he
didn't know, while he was talking all that time trying to show me he was
superior to me, was I was trying to decide just how much help I was going to
give him. I was struggling with the fact that so many black people had lost
their farm land, and here I was faced with having to help a white person
save their land.

So I didn't give him the full force of what I could do.

Sherrod concluded her anecdote by saying that she sent the farmer to one of
"his own kind" to get appropriate help. By "his own kind" Sherrod meant a
white lawyer. The furor attending this speech led
<http://indyposted.com/33732/usda-official-shirley-sherrod-resigns-after-inf
lammatory-anti-white-speech-video/> Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack To
accept Sherrod's resignation, according to CNN
<http://edition.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/07/19/agriculture.employee.naacp/#fbid
=2DlBHc5V7xC> News.

The video, though poor in quality is not a sound bite of a remark taken out
of context but an entire anecdote that revealed the racism of Shirley
Sherrod. It should be noted that she admitted to discriminating on the basis
of race in her capacity as a federal official administering tax dolars that
were allocated for assistance to farmers who had fallen on bad times.

The most prominent coverage of the recent NAACP conference was its widely
played accusations against the Tea Party movement of racism against African
Americans. Both Breitbart and Fox News claim that the speech was given at an
NAACP Freedom Fund banquet back in March. While no one disputes the
authenticity of the video,
<http://indyposted.com/33732/usda-official-shirley-sherrod-resigns-after-inf
lammatory-anti-white-speech-video/> CNN News questioned whether the speech
was in fact given at an NAACP function. If Sherrod had spoken in such a
manner at an NAACP event, it would heighten the irony of the NAACP's
accusations of racism against the Tea Party movement.

Earlier in the day, the National Tea Party Foundation removed Mark Williams,
a Tea Party leader as well as his organization from its membership roster.
If Shirley Sherrod is a member of the NAACP, it would be interesting to see
if she will be expelled as well.

Any " national dialogue on race "will have to address racism against whites
as well as blacks, Hispanics Asians or anyone else. If the Democratic Party
wants to "steal the thunder" of the right wing in American politics, they
would do well to embrace the idea that racism is a social ill to which every
member of the human race is susceptible.

If we can remove racial polarization from the social landscape, then our
spirited national debate about economics, the environment and America's role
in the world can reach a level of spirited and lively civility. No one
should feel that their skin is a uniform in a racial struggle. For the good
of our country, we should all agree upon this.
