pup> Afghan MapWar in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint
Command.  Operations are reported in the following provinces:  Helmand,
Kunar, Sar-e Pul, Baghlan, Kandahar, Ghazni, Khost, Logar, Nangarhar,
Paktiya and Uruzgan.

A local man in Uruzgan Province rats out the location of an insurgents' IED
pressure plate to Coalition Forces. 

Operations in 10 different provinces resulted in Haqqani, Taliban and
insurgent leaders being captured, including one Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin
facilitator in every single province!

At least 4 insurgents were killed in multiple operations after troops were
fired upon.  Opium, ball bearings, fuses, IED making materials and explosive
making materials were found in various weapons caches.

In other International Security Assistance Force Joint (ISAF) Command
Operational News throughout Afghanistan: 

Helmand Province

In Helmand province, during separate clearing operations, ISAF patrols were
engaged by numerous insurgents in Nahr-e Saraj and Sangin districts, today.
Coalition forces returned fire and called for artillery and air support.
After gaining positive identification, the artillery support and the air
weapons team engaged the enemy positions killing numerous insurgents and
forcing the others to flee. 

Also.....

An ISAF patrol found a weapons cache in Marjah district consisting of one 82
mm mortar round, two anti-personnel mines, several ball bearings and several
rocket fuses.

Kunar Province

In Sar Kani district, Kunar province, an ISAF patrol found a weapons cache
consisting of 18 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, homemade explosives, and
several IED-making compenets

The drugs, weapons and explosives were confiscated and have been or will be
destroyed by the security forces.

ar-e Pul Province

An Afghan and coalition force killed several Taliban insurgents and detained
several suspected insurgents in Sayad district, Sar-e Pul province,
yesterday.

The target of the operation was a Taliban insurgent who is the shadow
governor for Sar-e Pul province and key power broker in the north. He has
ties to foreign fighter facilitation and suicide training camps operating in
the province.

The joint security force targeted a compound in the district based on
multiple intelligence sources. While moving into position to secure the
compound, the security force was engaged by one Taliban insurgent. The force
suppressed enemy fire, killing an insurgent. Several other insurgents from
the same area were taken into custody by the joint security force.

The security force then secured and cleared the compound; detaining one
additional insurgent for further questioning.

While preparing to exit the area, the force observed several Taliban members
take cover in a ditch just outside of town. The security force isolated the
ditch, calling for all insurgents to exit peacefully. The insurgents, armed
with AK-47's, engaged the security force. The force returned fire, resulting
in several insurgents killed.

Baghlan Province

A combined Afghan and coalition force detained numerous suspected insurgents
while searching for a Taliban facilitator in Baghlan-e Jadid district,
Baghlan province, yesterday. The facilitator is a facilitator who provides
logistics for the Taliban. He works with his brother to transfer suicide
vests, improvised explosive device supplies and ammunition.

Intelligence reports led the security forces to two compounds suspected of
insurgent activity. At the first location, the force called all occupants to
exit the premises peacefully. Security forces were careful to ensure the
safety of all women and children before their search. After initial
questioning, several suspected insurgents were detained. At a separate
location, the security force secured and cleared the compound and after
ensuring the safety of all women and children, the security force detained
several additional suspected insurgents for further questioning.

Kandahar Province

An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force
patrol killed two insurgents and confiscated a large narcotics cache during
a clearing operation in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, yesterday.

The clearing operation targeted an insurgent courier who stores and
transports weapons and explosives throughout Maiwand district. During the
operation, the security patrol killed two insurgents that tried to engage
the combined forces. After clearing the enemy location, the combined forces
also confiscated a large drugs cache consisting of 2,340 pounds (1,060
kilograms) of opium.

An Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban leader during a security
operation in Kandahar city, Kandahar province, yesterday. The cell leader
was responsible for planning, preparing and executing attacks against Afghan
National Army and coalition security forces. 

The security force was led to the leader's location by multiple intelligence
sources. The force cleared and secured the compound and detained the Taliban
leader after interviewing residents. Two additional suspected insurgents
were also detained. An initiator for an improvised explosive device was also
discovered during the search.

Ghanzi Province

A combined Afghan and coalition force killed several insurgents during a
security operation in Nawah district, Ghanzi province, yesterday. Afghan and
joint security forces conducted a raid in order to disrupt Taliban network
cells in the district. The target was a Taliban leader who coordinates IED
and weapons attacks. 

The security force was led to the targeted location based on numerous
intelligence sources. While moving into position, the security force was
engaged by several insurgents. The force returned fire, killing several
insurgents. The insurgents were armed with AK-47's, a machine gun, two chest
racks, and a grenade. The security force also found an IED and IED materials
during the operation.

During the operation, an Afghan male was shot in the arm after he displayed
what appeared to be a hostile intent. He was treated on-site and transported
to a medical treatment facility.

Khost Province

A combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin
facilitator in Sabari district, yesterday. The facilitator who is
responsible for assisting in the emplacement of IEDs as well as assisting
Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin insurgents through reconnaissance.

Based on multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens, the
security force tracked the facilitator's location to a compound in the
district. They isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit
the buildings peacefully. After interviewing residents the security force
identified and detained the facilitator. The operation was conducted with no
shots fired.

Logar Province

An Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban leader, and detained one
suspected insurgent during a security operation in Pul-E Alam district,
Logar province, yesterday. The targeted leaser was the leader of an attack
cell, who plans and coordinates attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Based on multiple intelligence sources, the security force tracked the
leader to a compound in the district. The force isolated the compound and
called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. The security
force commenced their search after ensuring the safety of all women and
children. Based on interviews with residents, the security force identified
and detained the Taliban leader along with one suspected insurgent. An AK-47
with magazines and explosive-making materials were also found. The operation
was completed without shots fired.
Nangarhar Province

ISAF today confirmed the capture of a Taliban facilitator during a security
operation in Khugyani district, Nangarhar Province, April 2. The Taliban
facilitator is involved in coordinating attacks throughout Jalalabad
district, to include high profile attacks, and he maintains close
connections with multiple Taliban leaders.

Paktiya Province

Afghan National Security and coalition forces detained a high-level
insurgent leader along with a suspected insurgent during a security
operation in Dand Patan district, Paktiya province, Sunday. 

The insurgent leader and the suspected insurgent arrived at a combined
checkpoint and after being identified were detained by the combined forces.
The insurgent leader is known to be an improvised explosive device
facilitator responsible for emplacing IEDs and coordinating attacks against
Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF in Dand Patan district over the
previous eight months.

Both detainees were taken into custody by Afghan National Security Forces
for processing and further questioning.

Also.....

Also confirmed today was the capture of a Haqqani senior leader during a
raid in Gardez district, Paktiya province, April 2. The Haqqani senior
leader was responsible for planning attacks against coalition forces and
transporting IED materials and fighters from Pakistan.

Uruzgan Province

A local Afghan citizen reported a pressure plate activated IED to Afghan and
coalition forces in the Khas Uruzgan district of Uruzgan province,
Afghanistan, April 2. 

The local Afghan National Police checkpoint commander guided a patrol to
retrieve and reduce the device, according to ANP officials. An ANP official
said the removal demonstrates the increased cooperation between Afghan
citizens and local security forces. 

"The IED was safely destroyed with no casualties," said the checkpoint
commander. "We are denying the insurgents the ability to plant IEDs around
the Khas Uruzgan district." The consistent removal of insurgent emplaced
IEDs in the district has improved freedom of movement for both Afghan
National Security Forces and the local populace. 

"This is another example of the Afghan government's ability to provide
security for its people," said a coalition spokesman who was with the
patrol. "The success of ANSF today established their competence and
capability in the eyes of the local citizens."
