A combined patrol observed armed insurgents displaying hostile intent against coalition forces in Sangin district. After gaining positive identification, the combined patrol engaged the enemy position with small-arms fire killing several insurgents. In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan: EAST: KONAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Soldiers from 3rd Company, 1st Commando Kandak and Special Operations Task Force - East discovered three additional weapon caches during follow-on operations in support of Task Force 'No Slack' in the Sirankay Valley, Konar province, April 2-7. The Afghan-led operation followed a three-day mission in the valley in late March, which removed significant amounts of munitions from the valley. The newly discovered caches included 35 rocket-propelled grenades with 40 boosters, two DShK anti-aircraft weapons systems, 10 fighting vests, 20 grenades, two mortar rounds and 10 bolt-action rifles. The commandos also discovered and destroyed three insurgent fighting positions during the clearing operation. A combined Afghan and coalition force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Haqqani Network facilitator in Sayyid Karam district, Paktiya province, today. The facilitator plans high-profile attacks in the district and has close associations with other facilitators and prominent Haqqani leaders. The combined force was led to the target compound based on intelligence tips. After isolating the compound, the security force called all occupants to exit the building peacefully. The suspected Haqqani insurgents were detained for further questioning. An AK-47 and multiple grenades were found on the premises. No shots were fired in the operation. North A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The leader was an improvised explosive device expert who was directly responsible for conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was also a key member in the Baghlan suicide-attack network. Based on multiple intelligence sources, the security force targeted the leader's compound in Baghlan-e Jadid. The combined security force secured the targeted area, then called for all occupants to exit the premises peacefully. After ensuring the safety of the women and children, the force conducted their search and interviewed residents at the compound. Security forces identified and detained the Taliban leader along with two other suspected insurgents. No shots were fired during the operation. South In Helmand province, an ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents in Sangin district, today. Coalition forces returned fire and called for air support. After establishing positive identification of the enemy firing position, the air weapons team supporting ground forces engaged killing several insurgents and forcing the others to flee. In Helmand and Uruzgan provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered several weapons and improvised explosive device-making components caches in Garm Ser, Tarin Kot and Marjah districts. The caches consisted of 1750 7.62 mm rounds, seven pressure plates, 500 feet (152 meters) of electrical wire, several IED-making electrical components and two rocket-propelled grenade launchers. In Arghandab district, Kandahar province Afghan and coalition forces discovered an ammunition cache consisting of 1200 7.62 mm rounds. The weapons were confiscated and have been or will be destroyed by the security forces.
