The 1st Special Air Service Company was raised on 25 July 1957. In November 1961 the Company became the 1st Special Air Service Company (Royal Australian Regiment). On 04 September 1964 the Company was expanded to a Regiment and renamed the Special Air Service Regiment. This date was significant as it marked the 21st anniversary of the Lae-Nadzab operation in New Guinea; the first Australian combined land, sea and airborne operation.
