Is anybody here as fascinated as I am with this recent thread? I find it wonderful to follow the dance of engagement in virtual communities like OSLIST or Caucus or alot of the other online forums I'm part of.
And, as I've been using Usenet and listservs for almost ten years now, I have seen this kind of thing happen over and over: substantive discussion ---> light discussion ---> reflection ---> substantive discusison again. Sound familiar? OSLIST and Caucus and Openspace world will all go through changes and ebbs and flows about how they should be employed, and personal responsibility. But of course, all the discussion about shoulds and shalls is strictly hypothetical, because ultimately people will decide to use the forums according to their passion and responsibility (one person's passion is another's irresponsibility, perhaps?). So I can guarantee you that as much as it's a pain in the rear, someone WILL send a large attachment to the list again, A personal note of congratulations will show up, off topic discussion will occur, everyone will migrate to Caucus and then back again...all these things are in our future as a community! I have no prescriptions for how to improve the list...I think it's working fine. But I would invite people to observe what's going on here, and savour the dance of the meta conversation. But don't blink! In no time at all, we'll be back to stories and questions and envelope pushing, and it will all be forgotten...until another .pdf file shows up!
