Architects now use the term to mean "intense design workshop". There's a story to this: supposedly, at the end of the semester at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, the students would frantically work on their end-of-semester assignments right to the very end, even jumping into the "charrette", or cart, that the school sent around to collect them.
