Hello to all of you! With my first Open Space Conference coming up, I am wondering about the best timing for the closing of the Open Space.
Here is the design: It is a 5-day conference: 1st day: conference in traditional style 2nd day: open space 3rd day: open space 4th day: excursion related to conference topic 5th day: book of proceedings & action planning, formal closure of the whole conference I will be facilitating the open space days as well as the half day action planning. My idea is to ask at the end of the 3rd day, what the participants need with respect to action planning. Do they need to go deeper with the issues? Do they need to get together with their fellow country men / women? Do people of the same institution need to get together? My plan is to get an impression where the energy lies and design a process for the action planning based on this energy. Here are my questions: When do I close the open space? At the end of the open space (on the 3rd day) or at the end of the action planning - considering that I have a day of excursion in between? If I do a closing at the end of the open space, when do I ask for input about their needs for the action planning? Before the final round? Or after? I am wondering what will happen with the energy during the excursion? Is it better to close the open space before in order to make the "gestalt" complete? Or will it be hard for the people to get back in the process for the action planning after having closed the open space? What do you think about this? I am so excited about this opportunity to facilitate an Open Space in Nairobi... looking forward to hearing from you!
