Hello all, I had a fun occurance this week. Parents were writing to teachers, the head of my division and me (the counselor) with concerns about 'bullying issues' -- Name calling, unfairness, poor sportsmanship on sports teams, etc. The parents believe the problem is getting out of hand and want us to do something to help. I piped in quickly... that's great that the kids are going to their parents for help... and let's help them self-organize around the issues and find ways to help themselves. Rather than just working with the students having the problems, let's make it an opportunity for the whole grade. The teachers went for the idea and next Tuesday we will be opening space. I had lunch with a representative group of 7 students today to explore a theme and what they would like to see come out of the event. The theme they came up with is looking something like: How can we be respectful towards other people in the 3rd grade team, teachers, people in general, school property, and natural resources. We're meeting again on Monday to finalize our plans. They thought it might be good to start things off with Aretha Franklin's song R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Sounds fun to me!
