Heather:

Their "indifference" was with regard to the overall masters program and how
it is being run, not with their particular area of interest in Environmental
Studies. A large program, with traditional styles of one way classes and no
connection to alumni had reduced their energy and excitement for the
content. They did see possibilities, particularly in the OST discussion,
for a different approach and came up with specific proposals to change
classes and connections/relationships.

Larry,
Your report is really interesting. Congratulations on that positive
feedback! May I confirm that you were conducting OS with graduate students
(ie: people pursuing MA or PhD degrees)? What type of program / discipline?
I ask b/c in my experience, graduate students have been anything but
indifferent. Cynical perhaps, self-absorbed, concerned about success,
financial issues and mastery of the specialised vocabulary / theory/
knowledge base of their discipline, often seeking respect or feeling stymied
by their research / programs of study; but not indifferent, and never
concerned about disagreeing with others; except perhaps their supervisory
committee members.

So I'm really curious as to what was causing these grad students to feel
indifferent?

thanks,
Heather
