Love Michael's story :))

For me, setting out new signs is part of the joyful prep before an event. I usually have an old set rolled up just in case things are hectic, but it is a wonderful exercise to pull in helpers, co-facilitators, or random strangers and put them to work on drawing up new ones. I have found that to be a great learning experience for them, and in the spirit of the co-creation of the event. Likewise, at one event I roped in a couple of assistants to name the break out areas, and draw pictures to distinguish them. They decided on their favourite animals, rather than eg Room 1, 2... and their artistry and inventiveness was great, so we had a load of people new to Open Space (and for whom it was quite a strange experience) wandering around asking where 'Tapir' and 'Hedgehog' and 'Giraffe' were and people pointing to sketches posted above doors, which was both immense fun and significantly contributed to the atmosphere and therefore success of the event.

The signage, and also all the flip chart sheets once some time has passed beyond the report generating, can be recycled or turned into compost. /I really enjoy describing OS as a method for creating 'Compostable Conferences'/.

Very warm regards!

chris mentioned the topics pages... i sometimes, short events, take them down near the end, roll them up and tape them to stay rolled... and then use it as a talking stick to pass. the point being: "how we gonna take these issues home?"

i once did a public gathering in a medium-sized conference room at
the local office of a consulting firm here in chicago. about 20
people attended. one woman in the group caught my eye. turns out
she worked in that office, so i took one of the posters and put it
on the back of her office door, to be found later rather
mysteriously. last week was our 4th wedding anniversary! m

The fun part is seeing them show up in the strangest places a few

    butterfly . . .

Maybe a lot of them end up in the trash or lining pet cages . . .
but I like to think they go to some worldly use

So... what happens to all the posters and pictures after the OS
    event is concluded?

A couple of week's ago, one of my clients bagged all the paperwork
and announced she was off to shred the four principles, one law,
butterflies and bees for her chickens. Apparently, it makes for
    perfect bedding material.

Several clients are inclined to want to throw money at designing
corporate signage - I always try and talk them out of this.

There is something so much more engaging and exciting in turning
up at a venue and spending a few hours preparing materials with
volunteers and happy helpers. It generally leads to a more
creative and motivating time than simply sticking up perfectly
beautiful (but generally boring) laminated posters.

As for the end... there is something rather liberating about
ripping down the signage and putting it in the re-cycle box.

Rip it up and start again?
