Dear Juan, well, since you persist:
I did mention the conditions I work under regularly, that is since 1996
when I ran into OST, and that worked well for a predictable and
productive unfolding of the forces of selforganisation with all the
associated fun and other side-effects.
So much to the "First".
The "Second", regarding the invitation and the theme would definitely be
my "issues" if I were a participant or the sponsor, not in my role as
facilitator. As facilitator, after talking about the prerequisites at a
contact meeting, I would assist the sponsor in his search for a theme
(in fact, I do offer a 3,5 hour Planning Meeting which I facilitate in
which, among other things, a theme is formulated) and in designing a
process for getting an invitation out (also part of that Planning
Meeting)...this is all the work of the sponsor true to the admonition to
facilitators "Never work harder than you have to" and "Never delude
yourself in being in control".
As to your offer to "imagine...a sponsor that can make all these people
to be alive" I have to pass, just cant imagine it or perhaps I dont
really care to meet all those dead villains and geniuses and will follow
the string of "exquisite answers" in this "playful inquiry"...
Have a great time in Chile

(Take note that you can place the cursor on each person for knowing who is,
and that if you want you can make click on it for being redirected to its

Imagine now that you are contacted by a magical and powerful sponsor that
can makes all these people to be alive again and that ask it to you to
facilitate an open space with all them.
First, what would be your conditions to work on it?
Second, how do you think the invitation and the theme (or question) for this
incredible event should be?
I'm sure that many of you have also other exquisite answers to share with
all of us.
With hope, joyful and curiosity,

Ah Michael -- Have pity on Juan Luis. But I do agree. The 5 essential
preconditions for Open Space are just that -- "essential." Any time somebody
reports an Open Space that was less than it could be it is almost
guaranteed... the conditions were not present. Without a real business
issue, nobody cares. Without complexity, there is really no reason to have a
meeting (solve it!). Without diversity there is not sufficient richness in
the points of view to achieve novel solutions. Without passion and conflict
-- there is no juice to move things along. And without a real sense of
urgency, all that wonderful passion loses focus and power. All true -- but
do you really have to send the offending facilitator to the Star Chamber,
Purgatory, or worse? ("And I would not hire a facilitator who could not,
ripped out of a deep sleep at 2 am , recite these before drinking a cup of
coffee"). I think maybe 40 lashes with a wet noodle might do.

Subject: Re: [OSList] How the invitation and question should be?
Of course, JLW, one can save oneself and others a lot of aggrevation,
displeasure, white anger, wasted time and energy... by being a stickler on
this. HO translated these five conditions into our "field" of work, they
originally come from natural scientists who were wondering how life
originated... they are also the preconditions for the unfolding of
self-organisation.
1)There is a real business issue, the more real and the more needed, the
better 2)There is a high degree of complexity, the more complex the better
not only because if befuddles everyone but also because it requires the
whole system to get a hold on it 3)There is a lot of diversity in terms of
people and points of view (in the case at hand, neither the victims nor the
beneficiaries of those in the painting are present, yet)... the more
diverse, the better 4)Conflicting and passionate people and issues 5)A
decision time of yesterday, the more urgency, the better
If any of these conditions are not in place or not fully in place, things
will not unfold to its full extent, selforganisation will not unfold to its
optimum... whenever problems, difficulties etc. turn up in an os event or in
the action planning they have their root in those 5 conditions not being in
place sufficiently.
Now, this stuff is on page 16 of the Users Guide, Third Edition.
And I would not hire a facilitator who could not, ripped out of a deep sleep
at 2 am , recite these before drinking a cup of coffee.
Its also good to transpose these conditions into ones own tongue
(mother-tongue) to get the full meaning, here is my attempt in German:
1)Handelt es sich um eine komplexe Fragestellung?
2)Ist die Zusammensetzung der Teilnehmenden mannigfalting?
3)Ist die Fragestellung konfliktträchtig?
4)Ist es dringend?
5)Handelt es sich um eine offene Frage.
This stuff is in "Meine open space Praxis", page 22-23.
Greetings from Berlin just a few days away from the next Stammtisch where
these and other earth-shattering issues such as why the Germans did not win
the European Soccer Championship will be passionately discussed... if there
is none in your neighborhood, convene one or join us in Berlin... for all
Stammtische around the world have a look here (its part of the OS World Map)

Asunto: Re: [OSList] How the invitation and question should be?
I would ask that powerful sponsor to invite me to a contact meeting
with a small group that would represent the whole system he is
inviting (an actress, a statesman, an artist, a criminal, someone dead
for a long time, someone recently died, a scientist...) to see whether
the 5 preconditions for an open space are in place.
Once that were clear and they still want me as facilitator, I would
ask the sponsor to convene a planning meeting to come to an agreement
on such important matters as the "theme" (I certainly would not
propose one as I never do) and to draft an invitation (which I
certainly would not offer to draft myself as I never do).
About my fee? 0,0001% of the damage or good the participants were
responsible for in their lives.
cheers
