Hi HO,

I opened the space at Agile Open Northwest last week. It was our 7th annual
convening in open space and quite wonderful. We alternate locations every year
between Portland and Seattle. If anyone on this list is a twitter user, you can
check the hashtag for #AONW and find a running commentary as the conference
unfolded.

We tried a few experiments this year.
- We had a roving graphic recorder who sat in on some sessions and created
wonderful images of the discussions which we posted near the Newsroom area. You
can see them on the website that Harrison referenced.
- Because of wall constraints, we had the opening circle in one large room and
the marketplace wall nearby in another large room - where all the food,
newsroom and other gatherings were set up. It had a better wall space by far
and was more centrally located to the other breakout spaces. In the past we've
had a traffic jam problem as people rushed to announce their sessions, then get
them posted on the wall, some coming back to announce additional sessions. This
time, walking to another room seemed to introduce just enough slack in the
queue to prevent bottlenecks and keep the announcement of sessions running
quite smoothly. We might try that again.
- For the first time we expanded from 2 days to 2.5+ days. In the opening
circle we asked people to hold off posting sessions for the 3rd morning and
reserve those for sessions hosted by people who were inspired to "action after
the conference" in the earlier sessions. Some "action" sessions were posted on
the 2nd day and more on the 3rd morning. Everyone had plenty of sessions to
attend throughout our time together.
- We also let every participant know that we would hold a retrospective
(evaluation/continuous improvement meeting) on the conference in the afternoon
after we closed the Agile Open space and that all were invited to participate.
We wanted to expand the perspectives beyond just the organizers and volunteers
who've done it in past years. More than 20 of the participants stayed for it,
so along with the usual suspects we had ~35 people looking for ways to make the
conference even better next year. More experiments to try!

Harold attended Agile Open Northwest too! :) Always a bonus.

Diana
