Subject: [OSList] OSList Archive Woes

Dear OSList,

Please accept my apologies for all the issues you may or may not have been
noticing with the OSList archives since last August.

DreamHost donates webhosting services to the Open Space Institute U.S. and
other 501(c)(3) organizations. DreamHost is a democratic workplace, similar to
Haiti Partners, as certified by World Blu. And I use DreamHost for a few other
of my own webhosting needs for many years. I have been quite happy with them,
except for the issue of our valuable archives. And after many months of
conversations with their support staff this issue just keeps not getting
addressed, and even has gotten worse.

DreamHost has been having server problems for many months and it is affecting
all of the email lists that are managed on this server. I've seen other people
writing on the internet about this issue with DreamHost - but interestingly - a
searchable archive is not an inherent feature of our open source list software
Gnu Mailman. And I've not been able to find another hosting company which
offers searchable archives like DreamHost does. And all the other list hosting
companies cost money (unless we give away control to Google or Yahoo, etc.)

Unfortunately DreamHost has given no timelines for the fixing of this issue,
and I suspect it will take them months if they ever actually fix it. But as the
other services don't seem better, for now at least we stay on DreamHost with
the hope we can get a nice integrated searchable archive again.

But I've received a suggestion that we can get searchable archives for public
lists through www.mail-archive.com, which is a free service supported by
advertising. This may take me a week or two to implement. I'll keep you all
updated when this secondary archive location is working, and if/when our
primary archive location is working again.

Thanks for your patience! If you have any other suggestions, I'd welcome them
separate from the OSList at [email protected]

    Warm Regards,
    Harold
