Dear friends and colleagues, I have a little story to share about the development of the module *Working *with Open Space Technology. I fell in love with OST in 1992 when Harrison came to Ontario, Canada to offer his first four day Canadian OST training. The setting was the Five Oaks Conference Center of the United Church of Canada. George Hermannson, Director of Five Oaks and Larry Peterson, Director of the national Urban Core Support Network had heard Harrison speak in 1990 and thus began their intention to sponsor a training, and to bring Harrison to Canada. In those days, Harrison offered four day training sessions in OST. Participants included primarily Directors of various social service, religious, health and educational services, about twenty of us.
I immediately started using OST in my social/health service organization. Even though I was in the 'boss' senior staff position, I chose to be the facilitator. One initial multi-day OST meeting with Board of Directors/Staff/volunteers/community allies to develop the basis for a strategic plan, followed by a monthly half day OST meeting to work on each of the four themes that came out of the first OST meeting to further develop our strategies for implementation. There were many developments based on OST in the following three years. The Board of Directors and the staff team of about 80 people participated in active experimentation with me about using OST, what worked within our organization, and what didn't work. The learning we did together led to the development of this module of the Genuine Contact program, Working With Open Space Technology. The finishing touches for the module came about when I had assistance from a school principal, Monica McGlynn Stewart when facilitating a large OST meeting. She was superb in her questioning of me in why certain things were happening, what my thinking was, how I was making the many many decisions I was making in my role as the consultant/facilitator. Prior to that I was not aware of all of this decision making that I was doing. Via Monica's questions which she tracked on post it notes for me, I came to realize more that was needed in facilitating the OST meeting. Simultaneously, the Urban Core Support Network in most inner cities across Canada under Larry's leadership started using OST for many types of meetings including community engagement. The Urban Core Support Network used a multi-day OST meeting for the annual conference. This gave me the opportunity to be a participant in OST annually, to learn more about OST including how we as an organization could benefit from the annual meeting throughout the year...the benefits and trials of doing so. I had my own experiences as a leader of long term use of OST in an organization. I had the experience of watching and conversing with Larry about his long term use of OST in an organization. This led to two articles published in Berrett-Kohler's Journal: At Work: Stories of Tomorrow's Workplace. All of this experience led to the development of the module Working with Open Space Technology. For those of you coming to WOSONOS, this offer of Working with Open Space Technology by Anna Caroline and Thomas takes this module in their own unique way, building on the original development via their own wisdom and experiences....and their expertise in assisting others to learn. If you cannot get to WOSONOS, and are in Europe, our colleage Doris Gottlieb offers Working With Open Space Technology <https://www.dorisgottlieb.com/ost-2019>Sept 3-5 in the Netherlands.
