Like said: I did the same in Magic Earth leading to the same long driving times. When using shortest path, it is really shortest path. You see that when you zoom in on the map. You go completely through cities which take an enormously long time compared to going around it on some bypass road. When you drive from Venice to Berlin, you do not drive through every city/town/village either. You try to stay off the motorways to see the scenic routes and the beautiful landscape, not to get stuck in stinking villages with trucks blocking the road and taking too much time.
