Hi A Thompson - Thanks for your input (and sorry for my slow response).
It does seem there is a link between the existence of an intermediate 
destination, and the bizarre routing.
Fortunately in this instance I know the area, but it could be more of a 
nuisance in an "unknown" area.
I'll continue to monitor and experiment to see what might be the cause.
