If by "fan" you mean that little blue shadow that swings around the position marker, I never understood what that was for and it seems to only vaguely follow the magnetometer orientation (if "sensors" are enabled, which is a setting in newer android). On my older phone, the app trying to continually poll the compass hardware and update that was a huge battery drain, which could be mitigated by backgrounding the app but it would still log points.
