Says Tim: difficult to judge products not yet in the market. iPhone has already sold 17 million, tops customer satisfaction lists, software is the key ingredient, and we believe we're still years ahead in software, and now the App Store with a half a billion downloads. When you think about multiple variations of display, data input, it's a big challenge to a software developer. It's not very enticing for developers to build apps for all these different platforms. We'll see. We approached this as a software platform. We're very very confident with where we are competitively. We like competition, as long as they don't rip off our IP. And if they do, we'll go after anybody that does.

Abramsky follows: It seems until Palm came out, many of the other players navigated carefully around your multi-touch IP. But the Palm Pre almost directly emulates what you have already patented? Is that what you're referring to?

Tim: I don't want to talk about any particular company. However, we will not stand for having our IP ripped off. And we will use whatever weapons we have at our disposal.

THIS BECOMES FASCINATING. COULD APPLE BE SETTING THE STAGE FOR A LEGAL, IP SHOWDOWN WITH PALM? CONSIDERING THAT FORMER APPLE EXECUTIVE AND IPOD LEGEND JONATHAN RUBENSTEIN IS THE BRAINS AND DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE PALM PRE, THIS COULD GET VERY, VERY INTERESTING. IS APPLE LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR A LAWSUIT??
