It's a trite truism but truisms are nonetheless true. I think the core  
fear is "if there weren't sanctions against gay marriage either I or  
my spouse would end our marriage and marry someone of the same  
gender". Alcoholics were famously supporters of prohibition and people  
who are uncomfortable with their own sexuality seem to be the most  
committed to fighting gay marriage.

I'm sure the majorities who vote for gay marriage bans are simply  
social conservatives who oppose any change in accepted norms. But way  
to many of the leaders of the anti-gay movement, both political and  
religious, have turned out to fall outside the boundaries of  
conventional heterosexuality. And gay marriage can only be seen as a  
threat to straight marriage by those who, on some level, find it  
attractive.
