Ok, if you're set on Mr King then I have a few thoughts for you,  
having read a good deal more King that is probably sensible.

One thing that King has done is modernize the gothic novel, and in a  
rather different way than other writers before him.  In fact, there  
was not too much in the mold of King before King.  Another thing he's  
done is to blur the line between author and character in many of his  
stories.  Although this is not unique to Mr. King, it is unique as far  
as I know in the realm of popular fiction.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about Stephen King is the over  
100 movies in which he is credited as a writer (more than Hem  
Fitzgerald mingway and F Scott combined)
