Caffeine is also very easy to develop a physical addiction.
Because it is cheap and legal and readily available, and because
physical addiction isn't linked to psychological addiction, we just
ignore it.
But getting yourself physically addicted enough that caffeine
withdrawal will cause a severe headache, that nothing will easily fix
except caffeine, is pretty easy, and disturbing common (roughly
around 50% of the US population, I think).
I did see some good solid research on this years ago -- a
hospital surgical department wanted to know why a large percentage of
its patients reported headaches on waking after surgery, fearing some
flaw in their anaesthetics regime, and eventually found it was due to
strict fasting rules causing caffeine withdrawal symptoms in those
physically addicted.
        Cheers

                David
