Now that both our iMac and MBPro17 are backing up to a WD 1T USB drive hanging off our TimeCapsule, we're forever battling failed backups - usually, drive can't be mounted. Can't determine quite yet if it's the WD drive itself or if it's TimeCapsule or if it's TimeMachine not wanting to back up to drives hanging off TimeCapsule (or other computers on the LAN).

when I list the volumes, I don't like what I see -
anybody know why I have two listings of the WD backup? one owned by root and the other by kevin ?
I have just one WD-Backup-TC drive

drwx------ 10 kevin staff 296 Mar 12 2008 Time Capsule
drwx------ 15 kevin staff 466 Apr 1 22:38 WD-Backup-TC
drwx------ 15 root wheel 466 Apr 1 22:38 WD-Backup-TC-1

might the above be a clue as to why there's a mounting problem TM keeps reporting?

backups commonly fail from the iMac as well -

to get things to work, I normally have to power down and power up the WD or simply unplug and then plug in the USB cable to the TC.

sometimes, it tries to back up for 6-7 hours ... just sits there "preparing" - this is on my new MBPro 17 with very little data on it and very little changes on a day to day basis at the moment

when I hit cancel , nothing happens .. it continues to say it's "preparing" -

then System Preferences freezes ..
or goes into "not responding" -
can't force quit

several times, my machine would freeze and I'm forced to restart the bugger

I've found a gazillion people complaining about "drive will not mount" during attempted TM backups using external drives hooked up to either TimeCapsule or to other computers.

My Dual Quad backs up via ethernet to the TC's internal drive - and that's 95% successful.

The only reason I bought these WD drives (2 of them) was because they were 109 bucks / 1T --
and I was having LaCie failures (3 now)

oh .. I thought the "Latest Backup" time stamp was interesting considering the time of day
(backing up MBPro 17 to WD *usb hanging off TC)
