I would have thought that a small focussed group with a leader with a proven 
track record in delivering stable releases would maximise the likelihood of 
success. A large group with a popular (and deservedly so) leader who likes 
being popular is at best a suboptimal recipe.  This would be a interesting 
place to lurk, but I'm hellishly short of time.
