And if you want to use the nice fonts Apple bundles with OS X, use  
XeTeX (or XeLaTeX) since it makes it a breeze.
I also second the ease of use of LaTeX once you've got the basics down  
and don't plan on doing anything fancy (in which case, the TeX  
newsgroups/ mailing lists are full of helpful people).
