Dear all,

For 30 years, mailing lists have been of great help to open source
communities, but they are not flawless and they lack of modern features
expected by a lot of developers and users.

In recent years, a new generation of forum managers (Discourse
<https://www.discourse.org/>, Flarum <https://flarum.org/>, ...)
emerged. They have a nice and up-to-date web interface and they provide
a better user experience thanks to a lot of features, like rich text
formatting (Markdown), integrated search engine or ability to edit your
posts to correct a mistake.

For these reasons and many others, a lot of open source projects are
shifting to forums. Here are some examples:

  * ITK: https://discourse.itk.org/
  * Gitlab: https://forum.gitlab.com/
  * Rust: https://users.rust-lang.org/ ; https://internals.rust-lang.org/
  * Atom: https://discuss.atom.io/
  * Docker: https://forums.docker.com/
  * Mozilla: https://discourse.mozilla.org/
  * ROS: https://discourse.ros.org/
  * Orekit: https://forum.orekit.org/

CNES, funding the maintenance of the web services around OTB, and CS,
maintaining those services, intend to deploy a Discourse instance to be
used instead of the mailing lists. This forum will open in the coming
weeks and the mailing lists will be closed in early 2019.

We are convinced that you will appreciate the qualities of this tool and
that, after a short period of adaptation, you will not feel any
nostalgia for the mailing lists.

Incidentally, this migration will allow us to leave a proprietary
service - managed by a third party who can close it at any time - in
favour of a self-hosted, free and open source software.

Sébastien, on behalf of CNES and CS contributors
