I am not sure of the billing; I have never done one of the diners groups; I
work in the outpatient department mostly in low vision rehabilitation. I know
that the billing in inpatient is considerably different that the outpatient
setting; more like DRGs or RUGs than actual billing for units of treatment
time. Swallowing is not really an area of interest to me personally; but I
agree that it is well within the domain of our profession--and like you said in
your previous posting, the task of feeding oneself encompasses quite a lot.
However, I am not very bio-mechanically minded; I like to focus more on actual
activities rather than the components of those activities. In my mind, I rather
that PTs and STs address the biomechanics--I feel that in my case (I must
stress that again--IN MY CASE) they are far more competent to address the
physical aspects of a particular task than myself. So when it comes to
dysphagia, I could see a very nice team approach between the OT and ST
professions. I think that all professions can contribute a lot to the patient.

Thanks
Orli

Is that a skilled group, ie. are you billing for your time. If not we are
doing an injustice to our profession by performing maitenance groups.

Our ST does Vital Stim and bills Medicare. None of the OTs that I know work
directly with swallowing issues. The inpatient rehab unit has a "diners" group
at each meal supervised by either OTs or STs--making sure that the patients get
their meals thickened, use correct feeding strategies, etc.

Hello,

Is anyone out there working with swallowing patients? It seems to be a dead
issue for OT at most sites, but at my work there has been some talk about Vital
Stim and the inability for ST to bill for this modality under a Medicare
situation. Just curious.
