the the agent's preferences, there you can choose
"Follow up notification". That will give you your mail.
Besides that you will see a notification about new messages
just under the icon bar.

For example some of the tickets belonging to our agents are waiting for equipment to come in to be installed. A note is added to the ticket when the equipment arrives and it would be nice for the agent not to have to look through all the tickets each time to determine if any updates have been made.
