Personally, Nick, I'd create my own signup script rather than rely on the one provided. It gives you better control, such as the control you would like.
Alternately you could consider editing the template to insert a CAPTCHA section which could help reduce the number of phoney signups. If you were going to do this there's no reason you wouldn't be able to also add in domain validation.
