Also, I have tried to run ther backup script and then restore on  new server 
running CentOS 6.2, and it bombs out on the restore asking for the password.

I tried putting the database password into the script and no go.

If you think its related to the yum update you could try to undo the changes. 
Try :


yum history list


yum history info [# of last update]

yum history info undo [# of last update]
