And will cause a lot of bad press for them when they do it.

It doesn't matter what is invented to replace it, ping is on almost every
machine, and things like nslookup alternatives etc are just too difficult
to remember.

As long as Maps, Search, Mail, Android, e.t.c., keeps working, the
majority of people who don't really care about what is being pinged will
be fine. Bad press, if I were Google, would be an easy storm to weather,
if it meant we can change the course of this problem.

It does matter, if what we replace it with catches on. We just have to
deliberately do the work, or stop complaining when 8.8.8.8 "degrades"
and our customers complain.

Mark.

It creates no bad press for them. They've been doing this for the better
part of a decade. There is nothing that says any public facing server needs
to permit ICMP traffic. Polling servers have been around forever anyway,
they're not some new technology or something. They aren't limiting DNS
queries anyhow.

The only people who will fuss is the network operations community. And
that is half a drop in the sea.

Just trying to add a bit of levity to a tense discussion...

In my 15 years of IT, I've found that there is always a relevant XKCD comic
strip to provide insight or pithy commentary on any given situation.

This one is entitled "Google Announcement."
