I still got the checksum failure from the software restore disk, and when I tried the software install disk I had the HDD failure.
Life sucks, and then you die!
Computer fair coming up so it will be a matter of getting a suitable replacement HDD. It's a Maxtor in the iMac, but Seagate and Western Digital seem more common at computer fairs - any recommendations?

I wondered if the RAM may have been the problem and so reseated itI think it would help if you could put at least another 64Mb of ram in it or
after cleaning with electrical contact cleaning fluid and canned air -
no joy.
Perhaps it was the CD drive, so I did a swap with a known working slot-load CD drive - still no joy.
I connected an external Firewire DVD drive and tried to start up holding down the F key - still no joy.
Before I have apoplexy, is there something I'm forgetting about? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

128Mb would even be better.

He never proved to us the original 64 wasn't faulty. He only reseaated it. Either that or it's the hard drive or lastly, logic board.
PS I wasn't aware that "F" made the machine boot from firewire!! I normally use "option" and just click on which device I want to boot from.
