Firstly, many thanks to those who have joined in the discussion.
Although,personally, I happily operate with Stone Age tools (beige G3, etc). I am surprised at the interest generated by my friend's iMac problem.
It does serve as a warning to us all. Lightning can, and does, cause damage to computers.
James Allen's experiment may even suggest that almost anything will work in a pinch.
Finally, my friend's insurance company is re-examining his claim which, at the very least, sounds promising.
