Tahnks to those folk who responded to my posting.
This morning, I bolted the drive into the beige box, connected it up and, voila,
it ran flawlessly without extra drivers, flashing or angst.
Makes me wonder what I was worrying about.

Hi Pat

Like a lot of things on the Mac, if you plug it in and it works - bonus.
If it doesn't then you have a couple of choices: try something else or turn to the net for help or turn to teh Open Source community.
For instance, I have a 300MHz Beige G3 running 10.3.6 (which it isn't supposed to) thanks to XpostFacto and printing to an Epson Stylus 600 printer through the Beige's serial printer port (definitely not supposed to happen) thanks to a collaboration via the net with a keen supporter of what are now lowend macs from Illinois (?) who was a huge help.

I got a colleagues Epson CX40 (or something like that) working via USB thanks to the CUPS capabilities which you could add on to 10.2 but are now included in 10.3.

Lottafun.

Cheers
