From my experience with USB devices that don't mount volumes on the
desktop: sometimes the device itself will show up in system profiler
under "USB" but no volume is mounted. If this happens it's a good
indication that the hardware is not supported.
Try the device on another computer / a friend's computer / even a PC,
this will eliminate a fault with the device itself. Also, I assume other
USB devices work on your card?
Lastly I know that some devices don't like connecting through a hub (or
through certain hubs) so if you've used a USB hub, try connecting the
device directly, or to a different USB port on the card.
