If it has a pinkish hue, you might find it is just the backlight tube

Thanks for the suggestion re Google. However, while this article gives a cheap idea of fixing the backlight, it involves delicate work soldering, which I am not capable of. Do you anyone in Melbourne who does this type of work reasonably? Otherwise, I think ebay in the US is a good source of older screens, although not cheap- perhaps we ought to buy a job lot.
