G'day y'all (an australian/american greeting? ;)
Love youse all on Outback Mac! Living in regional Victoria (where all
resources are rare - Mac doubly so!), this list has been invaluable.
My latest MacProjects (wasn't that an early project manager for the Plus? ;) :
1) Just installed a new HD in wife's iBook (G4 800):
The Toshiba 30 Gig was dying a horrible death. Replaced with faster
Seagate 80 Gig.
Bizzare Question: The old HD kept on freezing - the wife noticed what
I call the 'Etch-A-Sketch' effect: it would sometimes come to life
after 'rocking' ... on dismantling the unit (with the aid of a great
free guide from PBFixit.com), noticed the cable that goes from the HD
to the underside of the Mobo was v. loose, with no 'tape' holding it
down (it should have been there according to the fixit guide).
Anyone had a similar situation?
2) Replace iMac DV PAV board & monitor:
Bought replacement for $30 (eBay). My iMac 'dies' once every six
months or so. Leaving it off for a week, and the occasional bit of
'percussive maintenance' brings it back to life. Something's loose in
there, so hopefully these new parts will do the trick.
Question: These parts were for a iMac 600 - mine's a iMac DV 400 ...
I'm assuming the PAV and monitor are compatible ... any advice?
3) Install new HD in a PowerTower Pro
Bloody SCSI is giving me the s*its! Bought (eBay) a 6 Gig drive, but
the jumpers were removed ...
Question: for a device mid SCSI chain, what jumpers - in general -
should be set?
4) Maintain PowerBook 540c
Am typing on it right now! This workhorse surfs, emails and plays
basic games running 8.1.
2 batteries give me 1.5 hours, had been dropped by children, and
there are now screws through the lid holding it all together (gives
it a rather industrial look!). I love having a machine that I can do
anything to!
Could do with a bigger HD, or processor upgrade, or more memory, but
not worth spending $ on it.
That's what this lurker has been up to! And a lot of it wouldn't have
happened without resources like LEM, this list, and newsgroups like
aus.computers.mac.
Thank you to all who have helped in the past, and here's for more in
the future.

Outback Mac has been and continues to be a good source of local help
and a source of rare parts etc for us down-under mac enthusiasts. It
is a list I value and continue to subscribe to. Of course it has
been a little light on of late but it has always been there when
needed and I will continue to lurk. If I can help I will also do
that.
