Step by step instructions on how to download Ovi Maps 3.3 and using it...
This has been tested using a phone such as Nokia n86, Nokia e72, Nokia n97,
Nokia x6, Nokia 5800, Nokia e55, Nokia e52, and all other feature pack 2 s60
v3 and s60 v5 phones. The phone must be supported or the installation won't
work. Any Feature pack 1 phones such as e71, n75, n82, etc can't utilize ovi
maps 3.3.
First, using your phone's web browser, navigate to http://www.nokia.com/maps
Go to the heading of "Mobile navigation for everyone" and find the link of
"Download Ovi Maps with free navigation" which can be found directly the
link of "and much more" under the heading listed.
After that, go to the "Download ovi maps for" heading. Navigate down twice
and you will find the link of "download." select it and the download of Ovi
Maps 3.3 should begin.
Install the program (The program can only be download into the phone's C:
drive so ensure you have enough space on your phone. This shouldn't be a
problem on a phone such as the e72, but phones such as n86 and n97 tend to
have limited C: drive space. Just be aware.).
After the installation is complete. Ovi maps 3.3 should be on your phone. It
will only be listed as "Maps" and there is no other real way to know what
version is being run, but since you have just gone through the process, you
should know you are running ovi maps 3.3. If you are having problems finding
this, it should always be in your applications menu by default.
Once you find "Maps," select it and you will go into the programs main menu.
There are two features that are easily reached, but for now I will discuss
the settings menu and support feature.
Once you are within "maps" main menu, click the top left select key which is
on all Nokia phones. A menu will open with three choices. Account (Which is
not really very important to anyone of us for the time being), Settings, and
support. If you select settings, there will be five choices. Internet,
navigation, route, map, synchronization. In internet, you can change the
connection ovi maps uses (This is very important because depending on the
phone and network, you can connect to a network that ovi maps uses to
download relevant information and maps onto your phone for the gps to
utilize.) If you go into navigation, the first choice is drive guidance.
Enter that and the English UK with street names should be the 15th choice
out of 59. The English us with street names is 17 out of 59. Select one of
those and your phone will automatically download the voice. After that, you
can go to walk guidance and the English UK with street names is 3 out of 10
and the English us with street names is 4 out of 10. Select it and you will
have the voice. After that, one very important feature that should be set up
is home location. Select it and if the location listed is not your home
address, change it by selecting my position which will automatically choose
the current location you are at and make that your home location, search
allows you to manually input the address you want. Home location is
extremely important because it allows you to use drive or walk from where
ever you are and gives you gps directions with little need to input
anything. The other settings at this point aren't that important and I won't
go into them because they should be pretty self explanatory and you can
decide if you want to tweak them or not.
When you are done doing all the things in the settings menu, you can go to
support. About, legal notices, and feedback is there. The other two aren't
accessible, but feedback is and I recommend you leave feedback to explain
that you want the program to be made fully accessible for talks users as it
will get to nokia and lend us all attention from nokia and if they are aware
of us wanting the accessibility, they are more likely to actually do it.
After leaving feedback, you can go back to the main menu by pressing the top
right select key. I can't say how many to actually press it to get back to
the main menu, but if you press enough that it leaves the program, no big
deal. Simply relaunch the program and it will automatically take you back to
the main menu and by default, it always leaves you over the drive option
highlighted. If you ever close "Maps," and relaunch it, it will always leave
on Drive highlighted.
If you wish to get driving directions, then simply press select. Once that
is done, you are always placed on home location highlighted. If you select
that, then it will automatically find your current location and
automatically provide you with voice guided directions to get home. If you
are not looking for your home location, after selecting drive, simply press
right once and you will highlight the search feature. If you select that, it
will take you to an accessible menu with three choices. The two important
ones are history and search which you can get to by pressing up and down. If
you select history, all the previous searches you made will be listed with
how far you are from that location. If you select one of the history
choices, it will automatically realize your current location and provide you
with voice directions to get to what you chose. If you select the search
feature, you can type in the place or address you want and once you press
select, it will state searching. After a bit, search results will come up
and you have the choice of selecting one. When you do select one, the gps
will automatically find your location and provide you with relevant voice
directions to get to your destination.
From the main menu, since drive is always highlighted by default, going
right once will leave you highlighting the walk feature. This is almost
exactly the same as if you were using the drive feature. Once selecting
walk, it will leave you highlighting home location which you can select to
get to your home address. Going right once will leave you highlighting
search and selecting that will leave you in the accessible menu with history
and search.
If you ever get lost, do not worry. Closing the program and restarting will
always leave you highlighting drive and this should be able to reorient you.
All the other features that are accessible should be self explanatory and
with not too much practice, you should gain a level of familiarity with the
program despite its quirks. If you are searching for a specific location and
the results come up as not found, don't fret, simply research and the
results you want will show up. For some reason, ovi maps doesn't always find
the search results the first time. I don't know why this is, but Nokia will
probably fix it with the next release. If there are any further questions,
feel free in asking and also feel free in editing this or adding whatever
relevant information you have found. Hope this helps.

Subject: Nokia OVI Maps First useful question
Good good. So it seems to be working, and I have set up list archives to
be archived over at
www.mail-archive.com.
What I really want to know is, what exactly does one do when they load
maps for the first time? Talks doesn't say much. I made it tell me that
I was at my destination in 100 meters but that was about it. Pure
accident, I think.
Any ideas?
I could ask the wife but she's busy most of the time. If someone has a
good definitive answer that would be great.
Much thanks in advance.
