Sorry, but I'm not very experienced in GNU autotools myself, a colleague told me, that libtool/libtoolize would be the way to go for producing shared libraries with GNU autotools. Documentation can be found here: http://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/manual.html I just use generic Makefiles not automake (including the .so suffix) for compiling shared libraries.
