No strong reason to prefer one over the other. USB is slightly faster, but most sensor networks aren't limited by the adapter speed (the majority of the delay is the temperature measurement itself).
USB is slightly less portable. We're working on the FreeBSD support, for instance. We use libusb as the access method which SUPOSEDLY is architecture agnostic. If you use the serial, you don't need any of the USB modules or libusb, and you have a wider range of adapter choices: LINK, DS9097U or passive (DS9097). Looking at the specs for the Kuro box you gave, it sounds like the serial port isn't as accessible, and there is no i2c or smbus. Hope this helps, Paul Alfille -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Rick Sherman Sent: Thu 7/20/2006 5:15 PM To: owfs-developers@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Owfs-developers] USB vs Serial I'm just getting started setting up a a system with OWFS for some remote temperature sensing. Are there any advantages to serial or USB? I plan on using a Kurobox running Debian. http://www.revogear.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=KURO%2DBOX%2FHG%2DWR&Show =TechSpecs Any problems compiling for PPC?
