Without saying to much to fast i guess the answer for that question is Yes.

Running openwrt (Third party firmware) found at http://www.openwrt.org
- i guess you can use the prebuilt packages from Christian found at
http://home.mag.cx/uclinux/wrt54g/

As of the hardware, i guess there is no "real" COM port on it, unless
you solder a "volt" 3.3/5v converter or something to it e.g max232/3 ?

I myself have used this one on my wrt54g:
