Hi Paul

Just some thoughts about the "non-addressable" chips. How about calling
them SD for Single-Drop devices as opposed to MD for multi-drop devices.

All of these chips except the DS2705 (which I am not sure about) are on
the march 1, 2004 non-obsolescence-letter from Dallas saying that
eventually they will stop making them... unlike the other 1-wire chips.
So I am not sure they are the best choice for new designs. Designers
should look at this letter before making decisions about which chips to
use in new designs BTW (it's available on the Dallas site).

Most can be made multi-drop when placed behind a DS2409.., I'd use the
main channel for the chip connection and the aux for tagging... that way
software can detect its abilities easily.

The DS1821 is a special case as it takes over the 1-wire bus as you
know, when active as a thermostat. Again it can be placed behind a
DS2409. I'll build and make available a small circuit pcb for those
interested in playing with this chip that will handle putting it into
and out of programming mode. It will use the DS2409 so you can monitor
the status of the thermostat while it's running from the net. Will be
able to programmed in service directly thru the common network and
device will be not be distance limited like the use of a DS9097E style
interface would be. If anyone's interested, send me a note. Should only
be a couple dollars of parts. In general I prefer the I2C thermostat
chips though...so this is really more of why not than being the best
answer possible. Ideas for it are welcome, contact me so I can judge
interest..

Cheers,
 David Lissiuk
