Not if you a) keep the IRC logs and b) make them available, like a mailing list digest. Can be even set up like one and mailed to the list once in a while. Both have advantages/disadvantages: IRC is instantaneous (if you're lucky to get the right person online when you need them), but encourages lack of deeper thinking - which mailing lists encourage.
