Mostly :) owfs actually creates a virtual filesystem to expose properties it can get from the 1-wire devices and then lets you mount it. One big thing is that it caches the 1-wire calls for a certain number of seconds (like 15 for temperatures) so that you can read it more quickly and repeatetly without hanging.
