OK, DS2483 works fine here with power supply pin connected to either
5V or GND.
Open question: Is a DS9503 recommended when using a DS2483?
I once build a device using a DS2490 where a DS2483 and a pair of
Schottky Diodes (connected to GND and VCC) have been recommended in
the application note of the datasheet.
