In theory, you should be able to take a very ordinary split core (the "clamp" part) transformer, such as this:
http://www.onsetcomp.com/d-image/large/75-AMP-Mini-Split-core-AC-Current-Transformer_T-MAG-0400-75.jpg which generates a small AC voltage proportional to the current, and put a diode on it to turn it to DC, and hook it up to a, say, DS2438 which can measure voltages or current. BUT the trick is sizing the split-core transformer to produce the right voltage range for the chip, which measures... uh... up to 15 volts? I think? I notice there's a complete kit here: http://www.hw-group.com/products/sensors/30A-Current-probe-1W-UNI_en.html But I suspect it's stupid expensive. Also with the DS2438 you should be able to get it to "log" the amps that have passed through since it was last powered up which could be convenient.
