Not answering my question, but just adding some more info.

After leaving owfs in it's limbo state for about 20 or 30 minutes, it 
aborts leaving a message that it can not detect DS9097 (passive) on 
/dev/ttyACM0 and then 'No valid 1-wire buses found.
