We had to get police clearances over here in Perth for a new client earlier in the year and it was as easy as downloading a form, filling it out, going down to the local post office with a passport and drivers license, paying ~$60 and waiting about a month for it to be sent out.
I'm guessing there is a lot more involved if you need the full on security clearances like some of the other guys were mentioning but the basic police one was pretty straightforward.
