Peter,

You can also do quite a lot of stuff from inside the SQL management
studio - just when you connect change the server type to reporting
services - although I would think that if you can't get in via the web
service URL you may not have any luck getting in there either.

I can't really tell you what's in there, as I've changed my local
instance to forms based authentication at the moment and it's a little
tricky to get in and do things.

The other thing that I would try is going to the portal (where you can
publish reports just with the .rdl file).

So that would be (by default):

http://localhost/reports

vs (where I think you are looking at the moment)

http://localhost/reportserver

Hope that's a little more useful.

Generally I haven't had any problems with RS like you are talking
about, just install it and go (with local admin rights on my local
account).
