Moe again. If a crack in the Earth's crust is going swallow either Moe or
Cheltenham, then I know which one would be missed most.

Several years ago I went looking for a "weather station" device that I could
stick up on the roof and feed its output into my PC and write an app to
record and display weather details. The only devices I could find were
self-contained and not "open" with a general purpose output that I could
stick into a COM port or similar. There probably were professional level
devices available, but I didn't have the links to find them and they were
probably really expensive. Maybe there are better choices available now,
even ones that can read from a probe stuck into the ground for quake
detection.

Thinking more locally, what about a set of sensors in every room of the
house that monitor temperature, noise levels, humidity, vibrations, light
levels, motion , etc. I'd buy a device kit that could do this with a feed I
could take into the PC. I'll bet they exist, but are probably specialist
solutions which are quite expensive. I'll also bet there are people who
build their own kits. The next step of course is to use the real-time
information to drive devices in the house like heaters, lights, etc ... I
know people are doing this, but I wish the techniques were more accessible.
