No replies, so just FYI ... I kept trying various daring tricks to repair Visual Studio 2017, but failed on all counts. I eventually gave-up and uninstalled (which produced the same Sorry error!), then reinstalled, then added Sandcastle, Installer support and other add-ons. This VM is a bit sluggish, so the whole process took a tedious 3 hours. This is a very severe problem and I live in fear of it happening again, especially on my main work PC -- *GK*
